Salaam
I think if they end up charging £2-2.50 for the food it might be a better idea to approach on of the local restaurants or fast food joints to get food for example simply chicken seeing as they charge around the same amount.

Salaam Jzk for everyone's input. Keep it coming iA. Jzk for that. Was really jet-lagged today, so couldn't do much. lets call them during Ramadan iA, and try to get some free food! otherwise, £2 is not a lot iA, for a good meal. i don't think after a long day of fasting anyone wants to eat fast food... a hearty rice + curry meal is much more healthy + appetizing. For snacks, I think we shouldn't go OTT on the unhealthy snacks--> we can do a fruit chaat (fruit salad), maybe some samosas and pakoras from ambala (i can ring them to ask for a discount/donation), and for dessert we can always buy cakes from sainsburys. Can we also have a large kettle thing to make tea in? otherwise we can always bring in 2 normal kettles from home. its gonna be cold and rainy most likely, and nothing is better after a good iftar than a hot cup of tea and cookies With regards to the room, the masses have spoken, although, true. I'll get onto booking the foyer rooms asap iA good idea, I'll email nihad to place this on the website. What about the RUMS union... Also, i think better than neon jackets would be a neon sign saying 'Freshers Ramadan Iftar' or something like that. hence we need everyone to come early, as there will be plenty to do in terms of setting up the rooms, carrying the boxes of food, bringing the snacks n drinks from sainsburys, and making the posters/printing flyers etc etc etc. Insha'Allah we should probs have our cool t-shirts by then also which should be sufficient. if we wore neon jackets, we may run the risk of attracting too much attention, and the freshers may come to us thinking we are in charge of mums and dads, which would not be funny.... actually it may be a little funny Sana

there is now an online bookings form on the room bookings website. i filled it in for uncles and aunties rooms, using ayeshahs details as treasurer. ayeshah did the eid dinner one herself. she tried calling rooms bookings first but they were closed. we should call them to confirm that they have recieved our requests, although once i pressed 'submit', the webpage said that they had recieved it, and will get back to us via email once the room has been allocated.

I just got an email....it reads
Dear Ayeshah
You will need to complete a booking form for each of your requests, and have them signed by the Union. We will receive these via internal mail, and make any bookings where possible and confirm back to you.
Regards
Michael Clarke
I dnt understand it...if i have to sign it and hand it into the union...whats email got to do with it?

aa, there are two ways to book rooms. some rooms are owned by the union, these can only be booked via the union. I tend to refer to them as 'union turf'. Most rooms are owned by the university, and can be booked directly through estates and facilities 'privately' (very expensive) if you like, or more commonly via the union. It is important to know the difference as the different owners have different rules, concerning things like food, for example. PM me if you need details on this. If you book rooms, you should be handing a form into the union. Their own rooms they allocate, and university rooms they book on your behalf. this is why it can take a couple of weeks for a confirmation, as i have mentioned before. This means advertising etc can only happen about 2 weeks after a room request is submitted, because otherwise locations cannot be confirmed. Note, if the union 'loses' your paperwork, something which used to happen a lot in the early days, things can take much longer. The only room this is not true of is the thomas lewis room, which is booked via the medical school office, as they own that. So if you booked online via estates and facilities, they may have asked you to book the standard way, so they don't have to charge you heaps of cash. hope that helps wslm NMA disclaimer: this information is now a few years old, and things may have changed since I left.

-Food-- have asked Rahsid to call Goodge street mosque on Monday iA to ask for donation, please let us know what they say iA -Snacks -- will buy these on the day from sainsburys -Tea- i'll bring my kettle for the sisters side. Can we have another volunteer to bring their kettle for the brothers side!! -Also need cutlery / plates / cups. (preferrably styrofoam so that we can make hot drinks). Any volunteers to buy these and bring on the day? They cannot be bought from sainsburys nearby. need to go to a large tesco or asda or lidl. -Reminder-- i assume rashid are u going to do this? what on... maybe making the most of uni etc? - i sent the poster , can someone please print this and basically make flyers (4 or 6 to a page)
Finally id just like to say that i hope all of us come to auncles and aunties to give a warm welcome to the new freshers insha'Allah. its in one week iA!!

Salaam,,
I rang goodge street mosque again, and they were definetly not very responsive nor helpful unforutanetely..
They said they do do iftar, if we want some then we have to come and talk to the director of the mosque...
Sounds like a job for the new exec.
I dont mind doing the talk either -- shall think of an appropriate topic ws

Salaam,
apologies for my delay,
the rooms that have been booked for uncles and aunties on sundeay the 23rd september are:
Cruciform Foyer Seminar Room 2 from 5pm to 8pm
Cruciform Foyer Seminar Room 3 from 5.30pm to 9pm
what needs to be determined now is the amount of people that will be coming from rums, which i will try finding out through foning as many people as i can but, ideally if u can RSVP ASAP on the forums so that will be great so that in case i didnt get the chance to get through to u, this count will aid us in ordering food etc.

Salaaam! I rang Goodge Streeet Mosque. The director said we could have 25 boxes...i just had to send him something in writing. I have jus emailed him but the brother i spoke to said that we could collect the boxes half an hour before iftaar on Sunday. I will wait for an email back from the director to confirm he is fine about it (even though he said he is) and if i have had no response i will ring back again on Saturday to make sure they are cooking for us. After that long whinded para...inshalah i think we have 25 boxes for Sunday....if it is not enuff then...erm....some ppl can share! lol
