Assalaamu Alaikum Re:iftar on a boat idea for freshers week Following the meeting on Tuesday have done some research into the restaurant-boat leaving from the place in Camden… Firstly, it’s waaaaay more expensive that we first thought: £39.95 per person (!!!) was the cheapest I think for the dinner and trip down the Thames. Secondly, most if not all the boats that leave in the evenings seem to have a bar/serve alcohol. Prob best to scrap this idea then…doesn’t look like its gonna work Wasalaam s

AA, just a thought on that, but if a restaurant boat is so expensive, and they won't negotiate a cheaper price for students/ block booking, then maybe consider variations on the theme? A quick google search ('thames boat ride') has shown numerous companies who do sightseeing tours. Maybe gon on one of them with a 'packed lunch' iftar? Not quite so glamorous, I know, but I think it could work... wslm NMA

salam al alaikum, so we could do a picnic on a sightseeing tour, or, if it's feasible, we could hire out our own boat and bring our own food. would we be able to get any funding from the unnion for this if we say its a freshers event (but not have it within the first 2 weeks so it doesnt clash with any other events)? jus typin in thames boat hire, you get loadsa sites, the best one so far is on www.thamesrivercruise.co.uk/rates.asp where you can hire a boat for up to 50 people for £600 (in october, when is still the month of ramadan). another site, £480 for up to 45 ppl, or £550 for up to 60; is slightly cheaper, www.jgf-boats.co.uk/hirecharges.htm(there also sightseeing cruise £9 per person, for min. of 40 people, not sure of the details tho www.thamesleisure.co.uk/pages/index.asp?area=6 ) (another sightseeing site £9 return 2 1/2 hours www.citycruises.com/rrrinfo.php ) (another sightseeing slightly cheaper, www.catamarancruisers.co.uk/cat/popups/p2pprices.html) will try an look for cheaper ones, but if we were to use some of the rumsisoc fund, as well as charging for the tickets, whats the max that we should use from the isoc fund, or is it best to try an fund all of it from individual ticket prices? wasalam yasmin

AA, unfortunately, I think you may struggle to get hold of money for this from the RUMS ISoc account. If the costs are reasonable, then I see no problem with resting it all on ticket prices. Afterall, compared to their peers, muslim freshers have considerably less to spend money on, and if you don't give them something, then they may jsut waste it. um. not sure that makes sense wslm NMA

AA,
Just to add I think that if the costs can be kept low than the ISoc may be able to cover this but it would need to be a case of subsiding the event rather than paying for the entire cost. Unfortunately the costs for hiring a boat seem a little too high to me for a student society. Any money in our account tends to go partly towards subsidising the Eid dinner and inshallah I think this year we should endeavor to print the Freshers handbook in colour to really do it justice.
Waheed will need to authorise any expenses on the ISoc account but, certainly I think that the cheaper the boat trip can be the better - remember there are no guarantees we will get 50ppl (could be more or less!).

Assalamu Alaikum, Just to add my two cents worth. Imperial College ISoc decided to go on a sightseeing Thames River Boat Ride and in the end they found it to be rather boring and it cost quite a bit (although they subsidised it heavily). Having said that it was the brothers who went on the trip and the IC bros are famous for their rugged outdoor camps, so a boat trip was a rather curious decision! www.union.ic.ac.uk/scc/islamic/gallery/gallery%20-%20boat%20trip.htmThat's a link of the pictures they took. Also need to take into account alot of other issues...if it rains for example! Wassalam, Qasim
