Salaam ALL. This thread is for all of you to do your planning and input on Uncles and Aunties night. Haseeb Khaliq is the Event leader, so haseeb i guess this is your platform. Details of the night, including the restaurant at which we will eat, as well as a list of times of when moms and dads will start and a list of the volunteers as well should be finalised by the latest date of August the 7th. Jzk All, Wasalaam Rashid

Salaam
Ok, so far i've found out that ramadan will be starting on 24th September 2006 (according to http://www.islam.about.com). I need to know who will be attending mums and dads and who will be able to come along to uncles and aunties, so if people could let me know via forums or email (h_khaliq@hotmail.com). I think Lebanarah would be the most appropriate restaurant to attend as it's close to Goodge street mosque and so people could attend Taraweeh before/after the event.

Isnt Lebonarah reallly small? I've only actually seen it from outside tho so i could be wrong . You're right though its good to keep it local. We will need a big enough restaurant to separate sisters and brothers though..that will be two large tables!! WS

lebanarah has a place upstairs where sisters can sit, and therefore will be well segregated, it isnt as small as it looks, it will easily cater for the number of people we will have on uncles and aunties night inshAllah.

salam al alaikum, thanks shirin for findin tht email, i was tryin to look through the emails for it jus now an wasnt sure where it wud be, sorry for not findin it out.
inshAllah i will be attending mums and dads and aunties and uncles, and helping with the event (i think it was said in the meetin that im sposd to be taking the sisters, so ill try an be of use; but, will there be other sisters as well as shirin an me with the group as well, for conferring, ensurin noone gets lost etc?)
i think la menara was also mentioned in the meetin, so maybe this could be a backup retaurant eg if lebanarah is too small?
we cud try callin the restaurants an seein if they do any discounts for large groups - does anyone hav a rough idea of the approx range of amount of ppl tht will b goin? - we dont hav to book nethin with the restaurants, jus get rough idea, so not knowing exact numbers shud be ok. an also, can we order center dishes, ie big plates of rice that everyone can take from, as it would probably be way cheaper than ordering separately? i think i need to check that one tho
btw, i heard tht in previous years muslims were rescued from huntley street; are we going to be doing that this year? i think its a good idea. i think we should go into huntley st an jus go up to loads of people who we think are muslim (we can jus ask them first an be subtle about it, ie say are u muslim, an if they ask why, we say "are you interested in gettin to know the isoc and muslims in upper years" etc. so that if they say theyre not muslim it wont look suspicious like we're tryin to gather all the muslims). we can jus go up to them an say do u wanna join us later or u can with us now to .........(restaurant)..... , do u wanna come with us... we'll be heading off in .....mins and hand them a scrap of paper with the place and address plus directions if they say maybe later as opposed to joinin us now; and i say scrap of paper with info scribbled on, so it will look informal and more genuine
maghrib prayers on that day will be about 7ish, i think 6.55 to 7.10 ? depending on which scholar ppl follow; so that should be ok, spending an hour in the quad and then finding ppl in huntley st an tellin them bout the event (btw, does ne1 kno wot time they intend on goin to huntley st - approx how long after start of mums an dads night did they do it last year if ne1 can remember? ie. will we hav to com bak later to collect more ppl etc. after maghrib?)
oh yeh, an i think we shud carry a couple of boxes of dates with us (just those small boxes of fresh dates) in case we dont get to the restaurant/mosque as soon as its maghrib

AA,
With A-level results now out and UCL's new intake confirmed I thought I'd suggest that final details of Mums & Dads (Aunties & Uncles) are also worked on as soon as possible. The students will receive their RUMS Freshers Booklets fairly soon i guess & it would be important that when they do they are able to visit the Website & Forums and get more info about this (RUMS ISoc's details will be in the booklet).
I think we should have a poster on the Events section of the website, as well as some details of the event itself i.e. what we've got planned. Many students choose not to attend this event and others are unsure what to expect so it would be reassuring for them if they knew we will also be there and will have something planned.
Any progress Haseeb?
WS,
Shayan

AA,
Hate to play "devil's advocate" here or sound too much like a pessimist but I think you're going to have difficulty getting people to come along. I mean, I'm not too sure about the numbers for last year but if they were good...then its all good - in principle you should be able to bring in those numbers again with a good advertising campaign etc - which I know the Exec are good at!
My main concern is that many Freshers will opt for the Mums and Dads thing rather than for the Aunties and Uncles primarily because many Freshers are in an infamilar environment in which they probably lack autonomy and just kinda "go with the flow". It might also be a bit too early for Freshers to start getting involved with clubs and societies at that time.
Would just like to ask how you could pull people away from "following the herd"? Obvisously the key thing here is dissemination of information and from what I've read you'll be placing the details in the booklet in addition to the website and forums. I think conveying the message that there are alternatives to being in a boozy environment is key to this....this way they feel they don't have to mix in with the crowd for the sake of making friends.
But then again you've probably already considered all of the above and I'm just being a techie sticking my oar into Exec business!! lol ;D
Lastly I would also like to add that I'm happy to lend my services on the day.
Ws,
Saj

AA, Just thought I'd give some feedback on the poster Rashid - overall I like it though I agree the volume of text makes it look a little cluttered. I really like the use of the Quad in the background & in all honesty the first paragraph is good, especially the bit about "they call it Mums & Dads, We Call it...Uncles & Aunties". As for the rest of the text I think the content is good here too but it just looks a little much - is there any way of adjusting the spacing? Lastly - the Goodness Gracious Me pic is a great touch...a bit of humour is always good! WS, Shayan p.s. I think our logo looks a little small

Salam guys ;D Nice advertisement! Although ´Prompt´ is spelled wrong ... and i think one slightly larger RUMS logo would look better than 2 smaller ones. I agree with Shayan that the bottom section of text can probably be a bit more concise. Other than that i think its quite funny! dont really watch goodness gracious me so found the picture a bit weird, but im sure thats funny too lol Good job! it looks good... i love the Main Quad backdrop..... its really dramatic, which i think adds to the humour. salam al alaikum looks very sophisticated and the dramatic picture helps it look professional and on par with SU standard and the pic at the bottom looks like we're gonna be proper fun people! so ie. is sophis and fun the message is also very good, especially the bit at the top, like its a big event you're introducing and this is the start of a new and exciting thing theyre entering (which inshAllah it will be) wasalam yasmin
