assalamu alaikum hope everyone is having a fantastic summer so far and enjoying the weather ... sitting in the sun etc i have been quite busy of late, but i thought i'd start this thread as i think its time to start thinking about upcoming freshers events for september. having spoken to the fresher sisters at length about this, i was under the impression that although the bowling event was fun, there was not enough emphasis on finding an alternative to the mums and dads event, which people felt pressured into attending. this is certainly one point we should try and remedy for this coming september... personally i think we should focus on 3 events: 1. auntie's and uncles / iftar event. killing two birds with one stone did we actually assign an older medic to each fresher last year? 2. a week after term starts once we've met all the freshers, and had a chance to advertise, we could hold a social event, i wouldn't mind going to trocadero again! 3. RUMS isoc meeting, with an emphasis on brainstorming events for the upcoming year. this will give a chance for freshers to get involved from the start, and get the ball rolling for what should inshaallah hopefully be an active committee and action-packed year. to get freshers to come to the meeting i thought maybe we can also hold an advice session about 1st year medicine, and what to expect etc. any further thoughts and ideas please contribute . jzk sana

Salaam! Sana brilliant thinking We HAVE to have sum1 at mum n dads! Seriously....i began to hate medicine at UCL from the moment i got to the quad becasue as soon as i opened my iftaar i was taken to huntly street and neva in my whole life had i been in lik an environment like that b4. It was really tough trying to find my way around a big new city and then to top it all....the only people i could ask for help were alcoholics! lol so yeh I think thats a brill idea inshallah! Bowling was really funny...and it was good to meet the sisters so i think we shud deff go again and i liked the Regents park mosque afterwards! I remember u took us lot in the first week and it was good because it kinda meant we had sumwhere 2 go - lol! ALSO another thing that we deff have to emphasise is the £3 to become a memeber. I knw shudnt scare people of with that right from the start but i dnt think it was made a very big deal when we strated so many people didnt even join....including me Also i was thinking....that if all the sisters cnt cum bowling (i remeber that happened this yr) then cud we hold lik a party thing that we do at the end of every term cuz then that way the freshers will get to meet every1 and wnt feel so isolated.....just an idea! But i think thats only if nt every1 can come bowling but maybe we cud have both...jus gives the freshers more to do! Ayeshah!!

Salam! ;D Good thinking Aysh. And happy birthday . I think-- an iftar party similar to our end of term lunches would be great. maybe we should do this a few weeks into term-- because we will have a better chance to advertise then. these are all separate events, that need to be taken charge of by different people. Planning starts now--- spread the word... we need the forums active again! if you have ideas , please share them here, and if you want to volunteer to do something, then let us know! Sana

AA, Nice to see that you are thinking ahead to next year already. I know it sounds strange, but you really need to have everything prepared by the beginning of August- not only your planning but also your advertising, handbook if you are doing one, etc. Otherwise it becomes too rushed. Not trying to apply pressure or anything, just telling you the way it is. Mums and Dads/ Aunities and Uncles is a MUST. I won't tell you what you should do, but do remember that first impressions count. And make sure you have fun with it. I take it Freshers fortnight is within Ramadhan again this year? wslm NMA

STILL NO REPLIES!!! lol
Where are you guys! I know people tend to get lazy in the summer but come on lol...seriously though..so far we have got
1. Uncles and Aunties night -- followed by an iftar rather than going to huntleys
2. A social event after the university freshers events have finished - perhaps bowling and iftar as we have had in the past
3. We need atleast 3 Major MAjor MAjor academic sessions next year -- 1 for each term - and 1 for each year i.e. one for the 1st years, one for the 2nd years, and if there are any clinical students willing-- then one for the 1st year of clinics..
When i mean Major, i mean booking out LT1 -- having a 4-5 hour session, with lunch/dinner provided as well
4. We need an Islamic / Medical ethics seminar -- Maybe someone could contact the people who do it annually (I forget the organisation that did it this year but Taj i think went to it) ..and we could maybe persuade them to do it at UCL? for a subsidized fee or something like that..
5. We need weekly classes starting from the very beginning of term...starting atmost 1-2 weeks after freshers week is over...And we need to decide NOW what those classes are going to be about...It could be the Seerah Class from Makkan period- It could be Quran Club i.e. Quran Tafseer ...etc etc..let us know!
6. We need atleast 3 MAJOR socials every year for both brothers and Sisters-- WE have the Eid dinner in Term one,,, So we can arrange something else for the other 2 terms, nonetheless something must be thought of and set in stone NOW before term
7. The freshers booklet is pretty much up to date -- it shouldn't take more than 1 day to bring it up to scratch inshAllah...and that can be done in August...I want to go with London ISoc freshers Packs this year, but I have a feeling that the main UCL ISoc will do that, so after establishing what they are going for, we can go for the opposite.... Freshers booklet can be printed around a week or two in advance of the freshers fayre-- and it doesn't need to be done in colour i dont think..We tried that this year and it was an not vital and also was very expensive...I would say a total of 35-40 packs would do for freshers
8. We NEED Sponsership -- Our contact at the MDU is no longer there, so we will find it difficult to fund our annual Eid dinner! which quite worrying --- The more the reason to GET EV?ERYONE to join up to RUMS ISoc at the beginning of the year as well as seek alternative funding for the dinner...
Every year we get more and more brothers and sisters in the freshers, so if the same people join up every year we should get an overall increase ..this year we were down by 2 members, I want next year to be different with double the number of members than previous...
Maybe even think of reducing the 3 pound fee to 2 pounds....what are your thoughts???
11. Charity Week!
We need a charity week representative to help run and organise CW this year at UCL and RUMS...we came 5th last year with a total of 11,300 pounds raised by us...but 4th place was taken by Queen Marys and they raised 21,000 pounds or something like that...and the winners raised 28,000 approx.. So as you can see we are FAR FAR behind and need to start thinking quick and fast of ways to effective fundraising...
12. Any other Ideas??
Post up!
That was directed to you. Yes you reading this. Post now.

AA, I want to go with London ISoc freshers Packs this year, but I have a feeling that the main UCL ISoc will do that, so after establishing what they are going for, we can go for the opposite.... Is the RUMS Freshers Fayre first? Why not tell the UCL Amir that you want London ISoc packs before they have even given it consideration, then they can go around you instead of vice versa. On the other hand, is it a disaster if the packs are from the same source? they can use your spares, or vice versa. Finally, aren't outside packs verbotten under union regs? might want to check this... if they are, adapt the packs with some choice bits of your own, and hey presto! both problems solved. On a separate note, how many weeks into term is Eid this year? wslm NMA p.s. to anyone reading this, please don't view this as an invitation to not reply.

salams,
with regards to sponsorship, would it be possible to offer potential sponsors advertising space in the freshers booklets as an 'incentive' to help out financially?or are there union rules against this?

AA everyone, For Freshers Week we could go bowling at Trocadero again like we did this year. The same student deal is still on (£4.95 for 1 game bowling, 1 bumper car token and 2 arcade tokens) if anyone is interested. Or what about the London Dungeon, I've never been there, is it aimed at kids? Anyone been there before? Or maybe as a event later in the year what about the London Aquarium. I haven't been there myself but there're supposedly sharks, piranhas, sting rays, clown fish (like Nemo) etc. etc. It's a touch pricey, a shade under £10 if we have a group over 10, but who knows it may work. Nearest tubes are Waterloo and Westminister. Check out their website at www.londonaquarium.co.ukWe need everyone especially the New Exec to come up with ideas and your feedback from this year so please please post up any ideas you have as we're all relying heavily on this thread. AA, In reply to NMA's post above I think there are rules against handing out packs produced by external organisations. As I remember, this year we were not allowed to hand out anything not directly connected with or promoting RUMS ISoc - including diaries etc!!! We had already ordered packs before we became aware of the Union clampdown on this so we handed them out at a weekly meeting later - which the Media & Comms Officer at the Union said would be fine - just not at the Freshers fayre itself. As for academic sessions - I am happy to organise that with Haseeb for those students in their first clinical year (I think I'm meant to be clinical rep so I guess that's one of my jobs - lol . Will post more specific ideas later iA. WS, Shayan

Salam OK so we have some ideas. Lets sort out the details inshaallah, -We need to book two rooms for this (one for the bros and one for the sisters). How about the nice larger rooms in rockefeller? -We need to arrange food. Maybe we can get a mosque or a restaurant to donate boxes of food? Who wants to ring up people to sort this out? -We need one sister speaker and one brother speaker to give introduction to RUMS Isoc and a reminder. -otherwise we theoretically could have this event in the same room, which would mean only 1 room needs to be booked and only 1 bro will need to organise a reminder of some sort. Segration may be a bit difficult though, mabe we cud use one of the cruciform rooms that have that sliding wall that u can separate a room into two? -Its been tried and tested, and i think everyone had fun. I am up for it again! What do u guys think? -As Ayeshah mentioned, this year a sisters meet n greet needs to happen iA. This will be in addition to the social event mentioned above -Shirin and Shaarifa are academic reps . They can deal with pre-clinical revision sessions. Please can u girls start planning this in the relevent section of the forums? we need to start thinking about WHEN and HOW these sessions will be conducted. rashid mentioned a few ideas in the above post... -Haseeb and Shayan have offered to help arrange 1st year clinical sessions. They should also liase with shirin and shaarifa on the forums (in the relevent thread) It is also a good idea if u start recruiting other clinical ppl to help you on the day as well. --BUT this needs to be discussed in the academic events thread. -What DAY every week will this be held? It is probably better to start 2 weeks after freshers week, and this will be 1 week after our freshers events, this will give them time to settle in at least - I think Quran Club is so so important for us to organise-- the benefits of studying tafsir are countless. By providing a place where people can take time regularly to read QUran with understanding, we will iA very quickly see the fruits of this... -but---who will give the talks? what learning and preparation does this require? How much will be covered in each session? these are all questions that need answering here. -BUT this needs to be discussed in the events thread. - what do u mean for both the brothers and the sisters? - us sisters have our end of term parties-- and probably we will have a few outings as well next year. do u mean in addition to this? - this needs to be organised and discussed in the relevent thread (events). - i take it rashid has volunteered to update this. if anyone (especially the freshers) have any comments about the freshers pack and booklet-- or can think of anything missing--- let us know iA. - is there a file of the booklet you can upload onto the wesite or forums? and money in general! yes we need to more strictly encourage people to join. i think academic sessions are the best way to do this-- but we need to be strict about it! In short, no one gets in unless they can show us their membership card. -changing from 3 to 2 pounds will not make a difference to members, but will make a difference to us. I think we shud stay at 3 pounds. if anyone cant join because its too expensive, then we shud be able to help them out iA -we need to find alternative sponsorship for printing packs, and in general-- can anyone answer shahena's Q? -I expect events coordinators to take control of charity week unless someone steps forward as charity rep. everyone else should be a part of this also though -we need to discuss this on the relevent thread 10. WEBSITE! -i love our website--mashaAllah it is by far the coolest society website i have been to . -but looks arent everything. if the website is stagnant, people will stop visiting. we should be constantly updating with info about new events , posters, hadith of the week, review of restaurants-- whatever you guys have to say should be added to the website iA. - i was wondering also, about the initial screen where the webpage ''loads up''. is it actually loading up , or is that just for effect? -but again- this needs to be discussed in the relevent thread. Well said-- we need you guys to start getting active inshaallah. As you can see, there is a LOT of work to be done, and it is the commitee's job to do it. Especially If u have been given a position, it is essential (ie not optional) that u are active on forums and contributing your ideas as much as possible. OK (sorry for this insanely long message-- but until we have a meeting , this is how things will have to be done!) Take care and i look forward to reading all of your comments inshaAllah

Assalaamu Alaikum, really really sorry about the delay in posting this up, should have done this on friday but have been busy with work last 2 days. Uncles and Unties evening:it may be better if it is held abit closer to ucl or within ucl itself rather than going all the way to khans, as this may allow us find suitable prayer areas and also break our fasts and also some freshers may be reluctant to venture out abit further due to travel arangements, timing etc. Im not sure about this but it may be helpful also to give a quicktour (meaning only 5 or 10 minutes) of the important places that the freshers may need from the first day like the prayer hut, LT1, the prayer corridor, maybe even the places where they can do wudhu like the basin for washing the feet in the toilets in the basement of the cloisters, the jummah prayer area. i think this may be helpful as finding the prayer hut from just looking at a map mite not be that straightforward for everyone. as i said this tour shouldnt take that long, max being 10mins, and this could tbe for the freshers who come on time, whilst we can have a person waiting for the latecomers and then after the tour make way to the appropriate venues for the event. it may also be worth printing out a breif (and i mean BREIF as overviews can be also given further down in the term in the academic sessions and other events, but this overview may allow the freshers to feel at ease from knowing abit about the course before they start) overview of the course for them, (i think the description on the website is quite gud and also i remember seeing some tips from students on some document that i think i got somewhere in the large work pile still unsorted after the exam which i will look for and forward it to people for comments) it can have some tips about effective use of lecures and what books to buy (which may be quite helpful as i remember a few people who were quite keen and bought alot of the recommended books that were listed on the reading list that they get within the first week. btw i think if a breif overview handout is given it shouldnt become a major part of the evening as it should be a more of a social gathering, and hence we can give it out and describe for a minute or so what it has and allow the freshers to read it whenever they can. i think also that this event and also the coming events this year, we should try to take a bit more photos that can be used for collages etc. for promotion of the isoc for freshers fayre, businesses, etc. (obvioulsy we should take into consideration, especially with the sisters, individual's wishes regarding this and respect their privacy) Freshers fayre:i think judging from what i heard about the funding issues that the frehsers hand book is going to be black and white this year, so this needs to be updated where appropriate and printed (at least a sample) before the deadline to show the union in order to give it out in the freshers fayre, and with regards to the changes i think judging from comments posted that it shouldnt be much but it could be things like adding sponsers adverts if we can succesfully obtaina a sponser by then. btw i will let u know what the exact date is for shoiwng the freshers fayre stuff to the union this year is in as soon as i can insha'Allah, and also if there are any suggestions and improvements that can be made on the freshers book then please post it up. Hopefully this year we will also have a projector insha'Allah at the freshers fayre so we need to think of what kinds of thing we can show on the screen, perharps picture collages on events that have been held by the ISoc, info about RUMS ISoc, and also if allowed information/dawah about islam. another thing is that we need to kind of find out how many people and who will be able to turn up on the day and setup, and be at the stall and so on. so please post up stating if u are free on the day and able to attend ( i think the date for the fayre is tuesday the 25th september, from 6-8pm). im not sure if this year we also had leaflets to give out along with the freshers book, as it may be quite helpful having size A4/A5 page leaflet (doesnt have to be flashy in terms of the material or anything thats expensive to produce) informing people about RUMS ISoc and also other relvant info, this i think may be quite helpful in creating an awareness of RUMS ISoc for the rest of the medics who are not muslim (whom we will be also targeting hopefully for the academic sessions this year) as we can print alot of this without much cost and give it to a large group of people who it may seem not cost effeicinet in giving the frehsers book. Freshers fortnight:having an academic session and perhaps a social or something else that is appealing may be helpful in boosting the amount of people signing up to RUMS ISoc during the rush of the joing week as this will allow them to get a taste of the benefits they can obtain by being a member. Sponsership:weve got template letters that Waheed sent last year to Islamic Bank of Britain which Ayeshah and myself are working on and hopefully we will be able to create letters for different businesses by mid week insha'Allah and then we can start posting them off and wait for replies from the, we will try to target a variety of businesses and hopefully by mid week also myself or Ayshah will post up the businesses that we will be approaching so if everyone can have a look at the list and post up if there are other businesses we should try and so on. Website:the website this year will be moving from the old server that ucl union provided (which was an external one) to a new server within ucl, and this has to be done by the end of july. tommorow i will email the ucl webeditor regarding some queries (which are being drafted by nihad, which i sould get 2morrow) regarding this because as RUMS ISoc website is completly flash this may cause a problem at present and how to overcome this and also to obtain the details required to access the new website. again really sorry about my lack of posting things up on the forums but hopefully few obstacles have gone so i can now dedicate my time insha'Allah. I think we may need to also have a meeting near the end the of july, after seeing wht resposnes if any we get for sponsership from businesses, and after the venue for the Uncles and Aunties evening is decided and we need to discuss what needs to be preapered and who will prepare it, and it will also allow us to discuss the other events that will be held during the start of the term insha'Allah. Wassalaamu Alaikum AbdulAlim

Salaam everyone! FINALLY! Well done, we have a post! Now just waiting for the rest of you lot to start posting...i know a few of you have promised me,,, so im still waiting! K, so abdul some great ideas on freshers...a nice summary of the things we should be thinking about and what we might get up to during freshers week and uncles and aunties night.. Everything is cool, just 2/3 points i'd like to highlight--> 1. At the freshers fayre we were prevented from handing out any leaflets etc that we didn't produce....before last year we used to get free literature etc and just leave it on the table for people to pick up if they were interested...now that is not the case --only RUMS ISoc stuff can be put up for the taking-- there's not much point I think producing different leaflets for different things as we've got the majority of information on the booklet and in the website....perhaps what we can do is make little flyers with incomplete information on it to tease people into checking out our website.. e.g. have an A6 flyer titled 'All the tricks you need to know about the Foundation Module' and then we can copy and paste maybe 2-3 sentences about the foundation module from our website review of it...and then leave the review incomplete on the flyer with a couple of dot dot dots .....'want to read on? check out the rums isoc website www.rums-isoc.uclu.org' or something like that We definetly should do something like freshers bowling and iftar -- that was quite good fun, and we should also have a 'how to get through your first year' session as well sometime in the first couple of weeks....something not so like factuall academic but more just good advice.. Apart from that I want IDEAS and POSTS up here with regards to other events we should be having through the year and not only freshers ideas... Wasalam Rashid

Salaam! Have been reading from above and i see that sum1 sed that mayb we could go to London Aquarium or Dungeons instead of bowling. I been to the Dungeons before and it was okay - but its really aimed at kids who love history.
I love the idea of going to the Aquarium though. I have never been but it sounds fun! Mayb we could have a short lecture or sum handouts b4 we go on prophet Yunus (AS). I dnt actually mind though - Bowling was just as fun!!
