Salaam ALL,
This is where the details of the EID dinner should go, including the volunteers, the date of the event, the venue, what needs to be done in preparation, who is speaking, have we got a sound system, have we got a projector, price of tickets, advertising etc...
Suleman i leave the rest to you...
Take care all

Salaam everyone.
I hope everyone is well and enjoying whats left of our summers. I no the clinical students are going back in a few weeks and would like to say to them good luck!
For everyone else we have about 5 weeks left to treasure and make the most of. I know this may sound like a long time but i can assure you that i will fly by.
Anyway the point of this message is to get the cogs moving on EID dinner. Previously we've had Eid dinner to be held after Charity week. However, as ramadhan starts very early this year, charity week will take place on the week after.
So for this matter I was talking to brother Rashid and he suggested having Eid dinner to coincide with charity week which will be on the week starting th 30th October . I myself think that is is not a bad idea as it would enable us to raise some funds, which is important seeing as though we are looking to be top dog this year....cant be letting GKT beat us again.....
So for this reason we could have a charity auction instead of a talk as we usually do? Im not sure what do people think about this?
Im also looking for volunteers to help out for this. At the moment im taking the lead for this but I'll need a good team to ensure that this years Eid Dinner is the best ever!
Im also looking for volunteers for charity week. This is a massive chance for us to make a difference to people that need help the most. Alhumdulilah UCL mangaed to raise £7000 and the combined ULU Isoc total was in excess of £133,000. So its obvious that every single person CAN make a difference no mater how small their contribution is.
Ill be posting up on a sepearte thread soon details on how you can get involved and ill be asking for any bright ideas in how to make the most of collecting.
Take care guys.
Wassalam

Charity auction sounds great. I have some cool islamic things to donate as well, have been waiting for a charity auction to happen for ages!!! although in this case , maybe we should consider making it a joint UCL - RUMS isoc eid dinner, to raise more money at the auction?? or maybe we could just join the auction with theirs.... im not sure. just a thought anyways also perhaps a compelling talk about charity in islam will get people motivated and in the right mind-set. although this would involve finding a speaker... what did you guys think about the speakers at the ULU eid dinner last year? obviously we need to also get cracking on organising charity week , i am in the process of getting in touch with UCL isoc about what theyre are doing. inshallah in terms of the bake sale at least, we will probably do that together this year as well. We will need more volunteers to help out with the baking etc too though. Last year GKT set the standard for what the true earning potential of a bake sale can actually be!! its more than you think it is trust me!! WS Sana

AA,
I had a bit of advice regarding a joint UCL-RUMS Eid dinner. I would strongly advise against a joint 'co-hosted' event for a number of reasons. One of which is that this year there was concern by the Union about potential overlap between the two societies - and the Eid dinner is one event that has thus far been unique to RUMS. Holding a joint event could prove to be very unwise for our long-term future.
Also, co-ordinating an event between two societies is quite tricky and would maybe mean the RUMS people losing some 'independance' with respect to what actually the event consists of.
As far as opening the event to students other than those from RUMS i.e. non-medics I would advise that due to the limited capacity of any given room, first priority is given to RUMS ISoc members (those ppl who've paid £3 and joined). Then the organisers can allocate the remaining tickets to medics & non medics. There certainly is no harm in having students from across UCL and I think it would be a great way to celebrate Eid. In fact, if I remember correctly last year the dinner was attended by the UCL President and a few other UCL brothers.
Just something to bear in mind.

Shayan

AA,
I have to say, I agree with Shayan with regards to the issue of co-hosting the dinner. The RUMS ISoc eid dinner has become somewhat of an institution and would certainly be a shame to alter the annual custom.
Another point I'd like to make to the organisers, in particular those who will be in charge of ordering food, is that to remember not every1 likes their food with a mountain of chilli! Last year's dinner was good in that respect - arab friendly ;D

AA, Having Eid Dinner coincide with charity week is a good idea. WRT food, I would recommend going with the same people as last year. WRT speakers/ auction, whatever you do, you have to know quite soon, as arranging speakers in the last minute is not so easy. Of course, you could just do any talks internally, i.e. be the speakers yourselves. That way the talk goes exactly how you want it. Sure, it involves a bit of research,, but it's worth the effort if done well. wslm NMA

AA, Alhamdulillah the Eid dinner this year was another resounding success (thats not to say there aren't improvements that can be made for next year!). Just like last year, the dinner was preceded by a revision/free Q&A session for first year students to get help from second year students in the build up to the first set of formative assessments at RUMS. Judging by the number of students who showed & the length of time it lasted I think it proved very popular and beneficial. Once again the choice of the JBR as a venue was ideal as it has plenty of capacity and is a new(ish) room which is very centrally located. This year unlike last we were able to sort out audio so we could play nasheeds in the background throught the evening - a nice touch I thought . The sisters had also made an excellent job of decorating the room and the tables. Our guest speaker, brother Fazal (ex-UCL student), gave a short reminder about the duties of Muslim students, which was very eloquent and a good morale booster for the evening. Our President (M.R. Akhtar) also gave a brief yet very thought-provoking reminder to us all. This year we made a break from the norm and ordered food from an alternative restaurant - & by all accounts everyone went away having enjoyed the food! Dessert was our old favourite 'Ras malai'. Another addition to this years event was a Charity Auction to raise money for the RUMS/UCL Charity Week collection. Alhamdullilah this proved to be a great succes with many beautiful pieces of calligraphy, Islamic Art, CD Collections & more auctioned off to not only raise much money but also provide a lot of enjoyment to all who took part. Another year another enjoyable Eid dinner! See you all this time next year (inshAllah) WS, Shayan. p.s. Charity Week totals will be announced at the ULU ISoc Eid dinner
