As-salaamu alaykum
As part of Charity Week 2005 (24th-28th October - THIS WEEK!!!) RUMS ISoc hope to raise money for orphans across the world. This week is organised in conjunction with all London ISoc's and Islamic Relief.
Charity Week is of added importance following the recent earthquake in Pakistan where many thousands of young children have been orphaned and are in need of food, shelter and protection.
The following activities have been planned:
Tuesday 25th October - City of London Street Collection (around St Pauls Station)
Wednesday 26th October - Collection at Victoria Mainline Station
Saturday 29th October - Camden borough street collection
In addition to this we will be collecting at UCL campus throughout the week and hope to collect money at Jumu'ah at the Royal Free & Whittington Hospitals.
Please do get involved by volunteering and collect money from any willing friends, family and acquaintances!!!
If you wish to help or would like further info please Email: rums-isoc@ucl.ac.uk

AA, Charity week again huh? wow, hasn't time flown since last year... How're the collections going? busy day today, I hope. For the rest of the week, can anyone just turn up and help out? Also, have you arranged these collections at the Whit/ Free? I usually found that if you gave ppl there notice in the week before, you got a bigger return. But the main reason why I ask is because they may have other collections already arranged, so do check with them... WS NMA

AA Everyone! This is a brief update on Charity Week so far. As advertised we have had street collections in the City of London (around St Paul's & Bank) on Tuesday, tube station collections at Leicester Sq, Whitechapel and Victoria stations and collections on UCL campus (Bloomsbury) on Wednesday. Also on Thursday sisters from RUMS & UCLU ISoc held a cake sale in the South Cloisters which went very well alhamdulillah. This was followed by a brothers 5-a-side charity football tournament and on Friday after Jummah at UCL the brothers had a Pro Evo Tournament (on Playstation I think and Arm Wrestling Contest! Collection also took place after Jummah at Goodge Street Mosque. Throughout the week many volunteers have been involved and I would like to thank you all and urge you to keep up the hard work,,, Charity Week is not over! Saturday 29th October: Street Collections in Camden Borough, we have another opportunity to raise as much as possible for Orphans and inshAllah increase UCL's total! Finally, for those of you wanting to know our total so far... all shall be revealed at the ULU ISOC EID DINNER (Wednesday 9th November, LMC) . Until then please do ask any friends, family and anyone else you may know to contribute, and pass collections to myself or Rashid (ideally by middle of next week). WS, Shayan.

As-salaamu alaykum, The time has come to reveal all... the Grand Total raised during Charity Week for Orphans 2005 by RUMS/UCLU ISoc's is £7000! This is a fantastic amount and a huge improvement on last years total. We would like to thank everyone who participated, this would not have been possible without all your hard work and effort. It is another sign of what can be achieved when we work together, sincerely for the sake of Allah (swt). WS, Shayan.

AA,
That's a lot of money. Can someone explain to me what the Charity Week is all about? I was thinking of maybe starting something like it if I could here in my own university community.
Wassalam.

AA,
Many thanks for your enquiry. Charity Week is organised by the University of London Union (ULU) Islamic Society on behalf of the charity Islamic Relief. University student Islamic Societys from across London participate (including RUMS/UCL, Imperial, Kings, LSE, Westminster etc, over 20 ISoc's in all i think, and some schools).
The aim of the week is to raise money for Orphans across the world, be they muslim or not. Money raised last year went towards building a school/orphanage in Kenya however following the recent earthquake in Pakistan it is likely that much of this years will be spent there.
I have previously listed the types of activities we hold in order to raise money, many students donate but our primary aim is members of the general public, we just supply the manpower!
The one criteria is that money raised is spent specifically on orphans or projects helping orphan children, again this is ensured by the charity Islamic Relief who deal with the allocation.
I hope that this has answered your questions, if not please do not hesitate to contact us again.
I sincerely hope that inshallah we will be able to work together and such project are successful across the globe as there is an urgent need to help orphan children wherever they may be.
WS,
Shayan.
