AA, Whassup? Well i know everyone is trying to get through the next two months of exams with as least hussle as possible, but as a 1st year i'd i'd firstly like to reflect on how i felt about the the 1st term in particular and the year in general with regards to the events that this isoc and the main one have offered. I don't think it i was expecting such a lack of sports events and a general lack of enthuasiam for socials and sports, i think that i was hoping that the isoc's would be societies that would cater not just for the islamic and spiritual events, but also halal ways to enjoy sports espcially for women. It seems when this sort of point is raised with the isoc's it's always something thats not given the priority and urgency with which it needs. sports has an enormous intergrating effect, everyone can enjoy it whether u are sunni, shia, hanifi, its a great way to advertise events, talk to other muslims, make friends and reflect. I have been involved with sport all my life, and i can honestly say some of the best experiences of my whole life we playing sports or competing at sports events. The point i'd like to make is that we need to get some sports events going for sisters in particular, and i would think that having joint sports session with the main isoc would be the way to go, particularly because medics have irregular social hours and so pple on other courses would be eble to make the sessions on a more frequent basis. I know that we probably wouldn't have concrete now because pple are studying for end of year exams, but we need to start thinking about next year and especially the muslim freshers who we need to intice to coming to isoc events and sports is great for this best pple who would consider themselves not practising enough to go to the meetings may come to the sports events and realise what isoc is reallly about, and it ain't all about religion all the time anyway! I hope this will give the isoc exec's enough to think about when planning for next years freshers event coz this years 'freshers' weren't impressed. p.s is there any chance we could get a hall booked for badminton or something? Maybe this can be voiced at the meeting, coz i am unable to make the 5.30pm meetings on thurs coz my ssm finishes late, but i'm still very much interested, especially in having joint sisters sports events with the main isoc's or having them at ulu if possible. I think the gym idea may need to be halted for the moment so we can assess the number of pple who r actually interested. Sorry this is so long!!!!!! Wasalam, Farah Bede, 1st yr rep and maybe future sports rep....... ;D

Wa alaikum as salaam,
ok, so we'll try to keep this thread on sports. please note a new one is started for freshers...
At the time of writing, the sports hall booking procedure for next year begins tomorrow. (21st Feb)
This year, there were some sessions booked for sisters to play sports in. This was left to UCL ISoc to arrange, and sure enough, they got a time when a lot of sisters could not attend. I should point out, that as we are not sports clubs, we don't get priority when it comes to bookings, and the competition for places is, well, fierce. Needless to say, the sisters sports hour was eventually cancelled. As it was a sister thing, and the way UCL ISoc runs things, i havn't got a clue who was in charge. Sorry.
Anyway, i have asked the exec to get hold of the boking form and try to book some ourselves. Part of the RUMS ISoc constitution is to encourage sports, so we might have a better chance of getting usable times.
There is another option with egards to sports. The social club at the Royal Free includes a Sports Hall, where we sometimes sit exams. It is available for Med. Students to use. I havn't ever really checked out the facilities, but it should be easier to book ( I hope ). Of course, whether ppl are willing to travel that short distance is another matter.
Yes, sports in general have been a bit lax this year. We still have to have the RUMS vs UCL football match... although that is often in the summer, after most ppl have finished their exams. But we should look into having it sooner too.
wasalaam,
NMA

AA, ok, heres an update: We applied for sports hall time, using both UCL and RUMS ISocs. There was a limit to how much time we could ask for, I guess that will be specified every year. But applying from both socs meant we could double time We wrote on the forms that we needed the sports time for the sisters because they could not take part in other sports clubs activities due to modesty, etc. I don't recall the exact text, but along those lines. equal opportunities rules int he union mean that we have a higher chance of getting stuff using this approach, plus, it's the truth Both socs got awarded some times. The process is that the sports ppl try to allocate fairly as close to what ppl asked for. Although it's worth bearing this in mind when applying, go for the times that best suit you, and then see what they give you. Now, checking the pidgeon holes is important, cos they don't email you, but leave a provisional timetable in the pidgeon holes. please note: this is provisional. If ppl are not happy withtheir allocation, they can appeal to the sports hall users committee. Like I said, the timetable is provisional. At the sports hall users committee meeting, the timetables are approved... after alterations by the committee. The committee is made up of whoever goes to represent the different clubs that have been allocated sports hall time, or if it happens, which i doubt, a club/ society that applied for time and got none. Appeals are heard here, and then the committe votes on whether or not to uphold an appeal. This basically means that in that meeting, the ppl decide whether everyone on the provisional timetable keeps their times. As you can imagine, if a club or society is not represented at this meeting, and someone else asks for some or all of their time, the committee tends to vote for the one who turned up and presented their case.As it happened, I got there (straight from my Welfare and Equal Opportunities Committee meeting) just before someone started asking what "...an Islamic Society needs sports time for, anyway?" Obviously, the ppl in the committee havn't seen everyone elses application form, so an explanation was required. Anyway, the committee decided we keep our time, and from a totally hostile audience, the sisters now have several supporters of their sports time. (yes, those supporters are girls, obviously, and no, i didn't talk everyone into submission). Anyway, a close call that was a great dawah opportunity in disguise (yay!) Anyway, once the timetable is agreed in that meeting, it's set, so now it's up to ppl to make use of the times we have. Which I don't know off the top of my head, but should also be posted here. as ever, please ask for clarification. ws NMA

AA, for the coming year, we have astor college sports hall booked on a weekly basis for the following times for joint sessions with UCLU ISoc (unofficial agreement- the union don't need to know about it): Tuesday, 15:00 - 17:00, booked under RUMS Wednesday, 14:00- 15:00, booked under UCL Thursday, 16:00- 17:30, booked under UCL. When the sisters have decided which slot(s) they wish to use, the remainder (if any) will be passed on to the brothers. Please remember, we can always just make the brothers play outdoors... toughen 'em up a bit over the winter months Wasalaam NMA

It was suggested that maybe we should change the time on Wednesday from the 2-3 booking to 3-4 (perhaps) to allow the users of this slot to attend the Islamic classes on Wednesdays.
What do people think of this idea?
Also what do the sister's want to do with there slots? I Know badmington has been suggested but i Think it will probably be two setions for sisters and one session for brothers. I think it would be good to have two different sports as people like different things!

AA,
unfortunately, the times are not easily changed. the time to request alterations was in that meeting i described a few posts back. Time in the sports halls is in very high demand, with some societies that requested time getting none at all. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it isn't gonna be easy.

Salam everybody This is regarding the sports timings and what to do with the time. At the the end of year meeting with rums we thought, like the posts suggest that sisters should take the wednesday slot 2-3 and another slot eg thursday 4-5.30 and that the other slot should be given to the brothers, although the brothers said they didn't mind not getting any of the slots and 'running round the park' Lol, but we should be fair and allot them one time at least coz looking at the years turn out of sisters to sports events, it is a pretty sorry picture of people not coming. As for what we can do with our times, its a good idea to have one class running for the sisters eg body pump coupled with legs, bums and tums which is largely a toning class and uses hand weights for the 'body pump' bit which we would need to get, i can do that class my self each week till exams and i could even get it as an ssm if i write up the neccessary paper work, and the other slot we could do maybe pilates or play football, badminton etc so really we need this to be emailed to people to get feed back from them, and get an idea before midnight june 21st so that this can feature in the rums isoc handbook and if, sister shakiera you can get it emailed out on the shurah group and also feature in the ucl isoc hand book reday for freashers this means we have advertising covered to avoid the heart aching disappointment of going to get this sorted and finding people don't know about it coz advertising isn't done by the isoc properly. wasalam Farah sisters Vice president f.bede@ucl.ac.uk

The Brother that suggested the time change pointed out that wed 2-3 would be a popular slot and that the society that has the 3-4 slot would probably be willing to swap it.
I think it is something to consider. afterall we don't want to divide the ISoc by this i mean those that are more interested in one can't then go to the other even if they are still interested in the other event.
Farah why don't you email the UCL ISoc Shurah directly as you were added as a RUMS link and sports coordinator?
we look forward to hearing from you!

Another thing that was suggested to me is that people may not always be able to attend the sessions we put on or the activity we chose won't appeal to all so maybe we could have a thread in the main section with a list of women only sports Facilities or sessions. and why not men only facilities and sessions too?
People can add on places they know off and soon inshaAllah you would have a fairly extensive database of sports facilities!
Just an Idea

Salamz All Hope and pray all is going well Well theres the update on the sisters sports activites: Having attended the ucl sisters shurah meeting on wednesday 22nd of June it was decided that When........ *sisters are to have two slots on the sports times 1) weds 2-3 (but this clashes with a class so we hope to change this to 3-4 by asking Astor college soon) and thurs 4-5.30pm. What....... *we have decided to have on wed to split the court in two and have on 1 side a toning class (LBT) taught by me and on the other side badminton (a sister called Ban will be teaching the badminton side and she's got her own equipment too yay Ban!!). We hope to teach this for the 1st term of the new year. *on the thurs session we hope to have basketball where insh'Allah we can have a muslim female coach to teach skills then have a game (as it's an hour and a half session). At the meeting it was decided to *make a poster to advertise this *for me to write about a 100 words on the sports committee and the activties we hope to do and why. Wasalam Farah Bede Vice President

No, as far as i know the ucl isoc didn't swap that time around, i would have done it but i can't as we didn't make that booking and as V. P im not authorised to. So yes someone (president or tresurer) needs to go soonish to make the swap....although sister Shakeira i think said we could wait until term begins and go then to Astor then but i don't know......?
Any takers...?
