In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate,
Salam,
I have a weird question: does the alcohol handwash contain liquid intoxicant(s)?
I'm curious about its effect on the validity of prayer... of course, I don't want to detonate a fiqh discussion!
Jazakallah khairun,
Wassalam

salam al alaikum, i would have to ask someone more knowledgeable than me, but as i know, alcohol is not najis, unlike urine, dog/cat hair etc, so according to this rule, could you conclude that alcohol does not invalidate your prayers, im not sure on this, check on this
but anyway, you should wash alcohol off your hands (i think they also said somewhere, do intermittent handwashes with soap, so ie, maybe wash hands in alcohol, but at several points during the day, wash hands with soap to wash the alcohol off, as it causes skin irritation).
if ur talkin about, when u say intoxicant, whether its the same type of alcohol thts drinking alcohol, i dont think so, thts ethanol, and i think its prob methanol, but i dont know about tht, i could be wrong; and although methanol is not really used as drinking alcohol (except for by some crazy drunks maybe in the past tht were desparate), i think it can still intoxicate if drunk; but again, as i said above, i dont think its an issue, as it may not matter as it may not be najis and therefore by definition then maybe would not invalidate your prayers.
and you do know that alcohol is allowed for medical and health purposes, like medicines and hygiene, but clearly not mouthwash, coz thts not an essential medicine and there are alternatives as well; tht went off the point a bit, but jus checkin tht u kno etc.
hope this helps wasalam yasmin

Alcohol based antiseptics are usually based on propanol/isopropanol however there are several ethanol based alcohol rubs out there and I expect hospitals use a variety. They tend to have at least 60% alcohol - a large amount - allowing effective killing of various microbes.
So bottom line there isn't a universal alcohol wash; there's a variety out there some are based on the intoxicant ethanol that goes into alcoholic drinks whilst some are not.
Clearly hand washing is important in a medical setting and as yasmin pointed out alcohol in medicine is allowed and is not intrinsically najis. Although you may want put forth your question to some1 more knowledgable than I am!
