Salaam This thread will be for discussion and planning for the Islamic Contribution to Science and Medicine exhibition (within Islamic awareness week) which the first years brothers and sisters have taken charge of. Now these are the pointers that need to be sorted out for the event, so please do have a look and post up ur ideas and comments and also anything that you may be able to sort out from here please do post up:
• The date for Islamic Awareness Week (IAW) needs to be confirmed with the UCL ISoc who have yet to make a decision on this, i will update this detail as soon as possible. The venue that i thought suitable was the South Cloisters. What do everyone else think? should it be anywhere else?
• I will send an email to all the first years who turned up to the meeting last week regarding this to explain further what need to be done, after which i will post up any confirmations or ideas that need implementing. If there are any otehr first years who have missed this meeting but wish to get involved with this event, just email us at rums.isoc@googlemail.com and we will also add you to the emails iA.
• Start thinking/researching on organisations we can approach for obtaining exhibition material such as posters, displays, ornaments, etc. and please do post up here with ur findings or ideas
• What ideas you all have of improving the event, btw I would like to stress that even though we have allocated this event to the first years to organise, anyone who wants to contribute anything, share ideas, comment on anything can do so, and actually encouraged do so for the best interests of the event.
• What the coordinators want people to help out with
• Also start thinking of names for the exhibition and perhaps brief description so that we can get the promotion material sorted out for the events
So everyone start posting and putting up ur ideas and the progress with the above points and any more that may be required Wassalaam AbdulAlim

Salam - My year actuslly made posters for this event. We all got into groups and made around 5 posters. 1 - Famous muslim medics 2 - Famous muslim discoveries 3 - Medical instruments found by muslims 4 - cnt remmeba 5 - cnt rememba
Anyway i spoke to one of the sisters from UCL isoc and she said that these posters are in the prayer hut and in excellent condition so could be re-used or used as an example to make bigger and better posters inshallah.

Asalaam,,,
yup i remember those posters! mA they were very very professional..and glad to hear that there in such good condition..
Ayeshah its ur job to get the freshers to follow this up...look in the hut and salvage these posters..
More importantly I urge u freshers to make this project ur own..
Remember this is your oppurtunity to not only represent RUMS ISoc in the Islam Awareness Exhibition, but also its your responsibility to try and present Islam in the best way you possibly can to non-muslims..
Like I said in my talk, we muslims today are like children playing in a diamond mine...we're surrounded by such precious and valuable knowledge but we play with it as if it is worthless... We know Allah swt has made Islam perfect and without fault, therefore you have to be sure to present it to the non-muslims in the best way possible - in part by your exemplary character as well as via the way you do your da'wah..
There is no fault in what your selling, so if they aint buying it, you aint selling it properly lol...So Make the most of this oppurutunity!!!!!
Why not even project the documentary 'Islam Empire of Faith' as people walk by? Why not have different Islamic artefacts on display, and most importantly have as many of you guys out in force in the cloister to talk to everyone as they walk by!!!
Lets show UCL ISoc how things are done lol anyyyway thats enough from me for now, ws

Asalaam Madeeha, excellent point! from what i gather UCL Isoc are still in the process of forming a bazaar/stall team for Islam Awareness week...so they are not quite as organised as us lol so we might as well take advantage of that What i mean is, the sooner you guys decide what you want to do with the day, and which day, we can pressure the ucl isoc ppl to let us have that day! Also it would be nice if we could see some brainstorming on the forums, with regards to what you guys would like to do on the day... From experience, although posters are great and all, we want people to beable to: 1. talk about islam with confidence 2. beable to answer FAQ's about islam and tackle common misconceptions 3. beable to talk about the poster/theme of what you guys will be doing onthe day i.e. islam and science.. To start things off, I was thinking we should maybe hire the projector from audio visual ppl, and project segments of the documentary Islam empire of faith...the bits which talk about ISlam and science...and we can include other bits that are relevant about ISlams contribution to society etc.... Just a thought.. Oh and we definetley need to have some good food and drinks (maybe arabic tea) to give to people walking by..thats always a winner..

I personally wouldn't recommend giving out zamzam during the IAW stall....for several reasons..
1. we won't have it in abundant supply i.e. 20 bottles or so..so if you're going to give it out, and you want more than 8-9 cups of zamzam you will probably have to quarter fill each cup..
2. I don't think the non-muslims will beable to appreciate the significance and importance of zamzam water by having a small sip etc..
3. It is a cure/shifaa for many things when drunk with the right intention, and Allah swt has given barakah in that water so i dont think it would be worth 2 'waste' it ..if u get what i mean..
It was reported from Jaabir ibn 'Abd-Allaah that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for." thus, it is probably better to distribute the zamzam in my eyes to muslims and ask them to drink it with the right intention for a cure to illnesses OR even some sahabi's and tabaiee's used to drink it with the intention of warding off thirst on the day of judgement..and iA with that intention it will ward them of their thirst on qiyamat.

Salam,
I know we have to stick to the theme of islamic contribution to medicine and science but I think it'll also be useful to give out free literature (if they want it) on the Quran and science and the Quran and embryology, etc. This will give people a positive insight into the Quran rather than the negative image that has been spread by the media.
Does anyone know of any organisations that can be contacted for exhibition materials. i have contacted a few already and am waiting for a reply.
Thirdly, how do we hire projectors and other equipment that we will need and do we have the authority to do this.

Wasalam, think that is a very good idea..ucl isoc are probably going to be trying to get hold of their own literature, but its definetly wise that we contact other organisations ourselves to not only got copies of the Qur'an like u said, but also islam and science books... I was thinking, there are many beautiful hadith and wise words that the Prophet (pbuh) has left us with, how about making a mini A6 booklet of sayings to hand out to people as they walk past...all of these sayings have mA a power behind them and to those of understanding shows them the true light of islam.. For the literature have u tried contacting al muntada? think its in leyton..and then theres regents park mosque, as well as the fisabillilah organisation..i think tehre are a few more but cant remember them.. If u want to hire projectors for the day, you need to contact abdul, inform him of which day and what times you need the projector for...this can be booked free of charge...then you'll need to get someones laptop, an extension cable, and maybe contact the Stage Crew for speakers? so we can project Qur'an/nasheeds/ show the documentary with sound obv .. abdul will have to fill in some forms etc..but that should be about it.. oh and ofcourse u need to actually decide what u want to project lol ws rashid

Salam,
I've heard back from Exhibiting Islam. They said that 'we have have a full set of poster on contribution Muslim made to Scientific Fields, also we have rare surgical equipment from the 11 century, as well as astrolabe from the 16th century and Muslim text book which are between 300 to 400 years old. We also have a very impressive handbook to the exhibitions we do which covers this area as well.' I was wondering how much our budget was so we could talk to them about hiring this stuff for the day. They also want us to obviously confirm the date.

Wow that sounds wikid mashallah. Find out how much it is to hire the stuff and then we can see if it is in our budget. I sent out a few emails today and rang a few ppl up regarding sponsorships and in the email i wrote about the exhibition etc so inshallah lets hope they get back to me (they never do - lol) I contacted MPS and MDU. MPS woman not back a week on Monday and MDU woman i left voicemail and sent email. do you by any chance know any companies or businesses in London that may be interested in sponsoring us?!? Aaaand.....Madeeha get ur other first yr buddies on the forum 2...lazy medics xxxx

Madeeha thats great news mA./...
I definetly think having an exhibition like this would make us stand out in the cloisters...and would add that X factor to the bazaar/exhibition...
ayeshah i have a feeling that they are going to be quite expensive...so I would definetly suggest pushing for funding - not just by contacting the MDU/MPS etc...but mayb by even visiting them.....and dont forget about places like Islamic bank of britain --- they start there donations etc at the beginning of every year..so would be good to contact them...maybe contact other organisations asap in getting funding and sponsorship...and what about even UCL?? for example, the petrie museum or some other department like the alumni department etc might be interested in us providing this exhibition in the cloisters and give us something to subsidize our expenses...and they always have quirky things like this up on the ucl.ac.uk main website...

i'm just writing to the director of Exhibiting Islam to find out about the cost of hiring all the stuff. He also said that if security and secure cabinets are available, there is also the possibility of the loan of rare Islamic coins and a very rare Qur’an collection. what does everyone think about this? do we have secure cabinets or will this just be very long winded?
