AA, Many have commented that converts/ reverts make better Muslims. I was wondering whether you guys agree or disagree with this, and why? Hmm, I could make this an essay competition (5000 words max) but lets just keep it friendly on here for now, k? wslm NMA

AA, Whilst I'm by no means an expert on this I thought I'd share a few very brief reasons that I have heard in support of this i.e. that Reverts/converts make better Muslims (you never know if you're lucky I might post something a little more detailed . Firstly I must say that this seems to be a very common opinion. One of the arguments to support this idea is the journey that each of us makes in discovering Islam. Many Muslims across the world are born into Muslim families where they are raised as Muslims by virtue of their parents faith, rather than a solely individual decision to practice Islam (this is true of most world religions). The claim is that when we are born into/raised as a follower of a religion our understanding of it is not as great as if we had spent time of our own volition researching that particular religion and arrived at the conclusion...this IS the religion for me! Indeed many people also claim that when we are born into a particular religion/faith we often take it for granted and very often fail to further our knowledge of the religion due to the misconception that being born/raised as a Muslim means 'I already know everything there is to know'. Many reverts spend many years on a journey of discovery often practicing various world religions along the way before they reach the point of discovering Islam and its beauty. Furthermore often the revert will have spent alot of time reading about Islam, its beliefs and teachings (over & above the five pillars) & studying the Quran - all actions which help to strengthen a Muslim's emaan (or belief/conviction) in Allah (swt) & in Islam. This could be a very detailed and in-depth discussion but to the best of my knowledge there is no absolute evidence or means to support either claim i.e that reverts or those born into Islam make better Muslims. I do pray though that we are all able to strengthen our belief in Allah (swt) and Islam and make better Muslims. WS, Shayan

AA, Thanx for a quick reply. Whilst I agree with what you say, I personally disagree with the original statement. wslm NMA

AA Well, to finish this off (too many unfinished threads here), as I said before, I disagree with the initial statement. The only characteristic that makes one a better Muslim is piety. To increase piety, remember God at all times, study the dean and follow what you learn. For the reasons mentioned above by Shayan, a greater proportion of reverts have perhaps a greater knowledge of Islam than born Muslims. It's a shame that to so many Muslims, Islam is an uncharted realm. To everyone, I advise you to push back some of those boundries... remember how excited the sahabah were when they discovered Islam, and how much they achieved. Until next time... wslm NMA
