AA,
We’ve started work on the freshers handbook 2006 and it would be really good if people could help us out with the following…..
[glow=red,2,300][1][/glow] We need photos from the following people (nice smiley, happy photos please so the freshers know what nice people we are ;D)
President - Rashid Akhtar Vice-President (Brothers) - Samir Khwaja Vice-President (Sisters) - Sana Rahman Treasurer - Waheed Mahmood General Secretary - Yasmin Mohsin Pre-Clinical Year Reps - Adnan Raja Ilhan Omar Events Co-ordinator - Rahema Bibi Charity Reps. - Suleman Rahman Farah Bede Ex-President - Shayan Ahmed
Also if the above could write a few sentences to go with their photo it would be great. I’m not sure if the 3rd years want to keep the same photos from last year??
[glow=red,2,300][2] [/glow]We need an introduction to the booklet from the new President (Rashid)
[glow=red,2,300][3] [/glow] Also if anyone has a few pics from the Eid Dinner/ other RUMS Isoc events could you please e-mail those to us as well --- we were thinking of maybe having a photos page if there are enough of them…
You can e-mail stuff to shaarifa@hotmail.com
We’re going to stick to the same deadline as last year for the minute 20th August but the sooner you can send your photos and descriptions the better.
That's all for now
Thanks
Wasalaam

AA, >For the fresher's booklet we were wondering if u could help us with a >few things. > - Are we supposed to keep the bit about UCL isoc? > - Are the meetings going to be at the same time/ day etc. > - Is there a RUMS Isoc logo?? I think there was a competition this year to design a logo, no? don't know the outcome. I don't think much was used in the way of a logo on the previous booklets, see above. WRT meeting times, as we are currently having a poll to gather peoples opinions on the meetings, and are discussing the best time for it, I think you may just have to wait for the outcome to be sure. But if you type something in there (I usually use loads of hashes #### or other signs to mark bits I have to come back to) then atleast your spacing is worked out semi accurately, so it becomes just a matter of filling in those blanks at the end. WRT an intro from UCL ISoc... well, there might be discussion about this, but I think it would be prudent to leave this out. The Union was rather keen this year to merge societies they deemed too similar, and even though they accepted we are different enough from UCL ISoc, having reciprocal introductions in each others freshers handbooks will be walking on thin ice. The question about the differences between the isocs will, however arise. So you could deal with that in different ways: 1. Just talk to people about it verbally, no printed anything. 2. Put something in the book about other religious socs. The differences/ similarities will be come clear to people if ytou basically add a one line description of each... e.g. CU - UCL Christian Union CM - RUMS Christian Medics UCL ISoc - UCL ISlamic Society RUMS ISoc - RUMS Muslim Medics The downsides- you have to include every religious soc to be fair. Also, have to make sure what you print about them is accurate. May raise eyebrows with the sabb office. Downside of printing nothing is that ppl may be confused for a bit longer... and curiously have an annoying habit of not asking the questions that confuse them. On balance, I would advise leaving it out. But you don't have to follow advice ;-) wslm NMA

Salaaam guys! Back from Egypt im afraid...lol..was sooo HoT! and stressful might i add...i feel like ive done a life time of haggling...for stuff i didnt even like. Think i need a holiday ... lol .. anyways to get to the point.. was just wondering Shirin and Shaarifa 1. how many pages the pictures will fit across....shouldnt be more than a double spread i.e. 2 pages.. 2. Remember the booklet has to be even paged i think because itll be made up into an A5 format with 2 pages on 1 on A4... 3. Was wondering what u guys thought of the front cover.....(The mosque dome with the minaret and the orange sunset background)....To be honest, last year we printed the booklets out in black and white which didnt really do that picture justice, but in colour i think it would look good.. Anyways, are u guys deciding to keep it in or if u guys have found something better great! 4. About the RUMS ISoc Logo... my thoughts were that perhaps we put the entries on the website, and have a poll/vote as to what the members like the best.... we could arrange this to happen before the 20th of August, and then include it on the front cover? Naadir, any thoughts on this? 5. In the 'Places to Eat' section, if you guys have discovered any cool interesting hallal places near by then feeeeeel freee to include them...I myself have discovered a lot more halllal new cool places that i think the freshers would love to hear about like - 'Toasties', 'Olives' , ' Effys' .....u guys herd of these places? if not drop me an email n ill update u....Also in this section i think it would be good to include a hallal butchers for those freshers that are keen on cooking....i no there are not many, but there are some ===> There is a bangladeshi place near Drummond street that do chickens as well as meat, and halal frozen samosas and kebabs n stuf.... 5. For the 'ADvice' section....., add whatever u guys think should be there but isnt// 6. Following on from Naadirs post --> we'l decide the meetings time for next year at our next meeting Wednesday the 19th of july, We will decide whehter wel have a vote on the logo online at the meeting as well, and i think we should Not put in the intro to ucl isoc for the same reasons....so get rid of that para in the booklet please 7. The introduction.... ill try think of something to write soon...i hope...n will send it out to u when i do... Sorry for dragggging on...just felt like nattering a bit... InshAllah there shouldnt 2 much to do....i tried to make the booklet as error-free as possible last year...but it was a lot harder when starting from scratch... Take care all C ya at meeting Wasalaam Rashid

AA, 1) the friendly faces picture page isn’t going to be more than a double spread. The random pictures from rums isoc events page was an idea to replace the second-to-last page which had college reps and contacts on before so it would be only one page 2) Yup…dont the number of pages have to be divisible by 4 as well since there are 4 pages on each sheet of a4 ( 2 front and 2 back) so there aren’t any blank pages? 3) Yeah we liked the front cover from last year, it’ll look really good in colour. Will prob keep it unless we find something better 5) We have got a few places in mind to add…. Haven’t heard of any of the places you mentioned.. if you could possibly write a little blurb for each them that would be great. If anyone else has discovered any new places to eat that they would like to be included please feel free to let us know and we’ll try to include them 6) the ucl bit is gone now soz for rushed reply thanks wasalaam Shirin and Shaarifa

Salam all... Is there any way for anyone else to add to the booklet or give input while its being assembled? in any case I think such issues eg halal restaurants are best covered if discussed on the forums so more people CAN give input.. but at the mo we're all pretty much in the dark. (or is it just me lol! ) anyways tc all WS Sana

AA, Firstly Shaarifa and I really did not intend for anyone to feel in the dark about what’s going on with the booklet and we’re really sorry if that has happened. Basically its staying pretty similar to last years (you can download the old 2005 version in the second post of this thread) but it will probably be half the size i.e. A6 not A5. the advice section is being altered, the weekly and annual events bit is being updated and just some general re-wording and shuffling of stuff etc. As mentioned in a post above if anyone else has discovered any new places to eat that they would like to be included pleeasee pleeasee feel free to let us know and we’ll try to include them inshAllah So far the places to eat mentioned are: -simply chicken -anwars -ravi’s kebabs -iccos -subways -nandos -khans -ucl refec/union -bloomsbury cafe -tescos/sainsburys we plan to also include chopstiks, toasties (?) , olives (?) and effys (?) would be gd if someone could help us with a blurb for the last 3 since neither of us have heard of them And if anyone wants to add to the existing advice section of any other part of the booklet please feel free to post up your ideas here and we’ll see what we can do inshAllah taking into consideration the space and existing pages. Hope that’s answered your query Sana Also, Rashid, you said that there should still be a contacts page --- I thought that that i vaguely remember someone said in the first meeting in the TLR that no personal email adds are allowed. Bit confused...could someone clear this up please?? WS Shirin and Shaarifa

AA, Just to confirm that UCL Union Media & Communication regulations do not allow us to include personal email addresses in any club & society material. The only contact email address we are allowed to include is an official society address. I suggest that the two email addresses below are included (or just the UCL one if you prefer?): rums-isoc@ucl.ac.uk rumsisoc@yahoo.co.uk Hope that helps. With regards to keeping people informed about the progress/content of the booklet I don't think you could reasonably be expected to update us all at every step. However, Inshallah we are all able to email yourselves any comments/suggestions for material to be included/excluded etc. The final version should be seen by the Exec prior to printing just for editing (which does include you Sana WS, Shayan

salam al alaikum, for the contacts bit, ok im takin on nadirs role a bit here - talk about the forums! i think along with the isoc email ads u shud mention tht thers loads of advice/discussions/current happenings on the forums and give the email ad of the site
but the most important thing is TELL THEM TO GOOGLE "RUMS ISOC" *******tell them this under or even above the web ad******* v important coz it took me ages to learn the site ad, and i spent a lot a lot of time keep attempting typing in soooo many different things the site could be, so i think if u tell them to jus google rums isoc, they will remember that when theyre tryin to connect to it (it took me a long time to figure out to google it!) wasalam yasmin

AA,
I agree that it would be a very good idea if the Freshers booklet had a litltle blurb on the forums as a pointer to further advice/discussion, and it would be worth including the link beneath the main website address in the booklet.
However, I'm not sure you really need to specifically encourage people to google it because the booklet will have the exact URL in it and so they should inshallah be able to find it! Either way I'm sure anyone who's lost it will probably google it anyway and ther is no harm if it is included.
Just a thought, WS,
Shayan.

salam al alaikum, "no harm if it is included" - did u mean the bit recommending googling rums isoc if they do not hav the url at hand/hav forgotten it? if u did, ur right, it prob wudnt do much harm. an if it took me tht long to find the site finally, it may take someone else nearly as long to find it too! so mentionin it would easily engrain into their mind tht they can jus google it if they forget or dont hav the booklet with them an thts wot theyll think of doin mayb when they cant remember the site.. wasalam yasmin
btw, s an s, u r mentionin tht khans is in bayswater an tht theres loadsa other restaurants in bayswater? also, mayb mention tht ther r loadsa restaurants round goodge street, u cud tlk bout tht mayb when u mention iccos; an also theres tht really cute italian restaurant off goodge street, i can get the name of tht mayb from the business card tht i took from them. an dont forget boots!! also, eat? oh yeh, and ask somwhere off tottenham court road. wasalam xx

AA,
the sponsor from the MDU wants to see a draft of the booklet so far. Can we take it that no one else has anything further to contribute?? this is your last chance to contribute if you still want to.... there is about a half a page gap on one of the pages that we are still trying to fill...any ideas???
