Salaam Shirin,
Am posting all the things that need to be updated on the draft that you sent so far on this post, as it is nice to keep a record of changes and things for the future years:
1. The following is the very slightly changed Presidents Speech that you should include in the booklet:Welcome to RUMS Islamic Society!
Assalamualaykum and welcome to the Royal Free & University College Medical School Islamic Society!
A bit of a mouthful we know so we like to call ourselves RUMS ISoc! We represent Muslim students within the medical school. First things first, we would like to congratulate you all for getting into one of the best medical schools in the country!
We hope that your time here will be one that you thoroughly enjoy, and that’s where we come in. We aim to make you as comfortable as possible at UCL, whether you are Muslim or not, whether you are practicing or not, you’re all just as important. Our aim is to provide help with all aspects of the course including giving you tutorials, revision sessions and general advice. If you have a problem and don’t know who can help, come and find your RUMS ISoc Team!
It’s not all about work though! RUMS ISoc organise a host of events including sports activities, our annual Eid dinner and inviting guest speakers to our medicine and Islam & ethics talks.
We also provide a number of social events where you can mingle with medics from all years. All you have to do is get involved!
For more information, comments and suggestions, check out our website! Go to
www.rums-isoc.uclu.org. It’s the best way to keep up to date with what’s going on! You can also email us at rums-isoc@ucl.ac.uk.
Every Tuesday RUMS ISoc meet in the Rockefeller cafe at 5:15pm Everybody is welcome.
Wassalamualaykum
Rashid Akhtar ~ President.
2. The Main page needs the new logo on it, which i will send to you shortly.
3. Also the main page/cover page.. im going to send you around 2/3 emails after this post, with many amazing photographs that you could use as a background..for some reason the current one you have seems a bit blurry ..but maybe It wont be so bad on print..
4. The details of the freshers event on The Freshers Week page:Freshers Bowling and Iftar/Dinner
Venue: Trocadero (Bowling) & Iftar/Maghrib & Edgware Rd (Dinner)
Date: 5th Oct 06
Meet: Outside Cruciform from 4.00 to 4.15pm
Bowling is planned to finish by 6pm to make it in time for Iftar at 6.30 pm. <--- make sure you include this line
5. The Nando’s review Im afraid will have to go…I put it in last year, but recently have discovered the Nandos is not hallal—the butchers they obtain their chicken, ‘stun’ the chicken before they slaughter them. I.e. they electrocute their chickens to make it easier to slaughter…this is unacceptable in Islam, as the whole point of ‘Zabiha’ meat is that it’s quick thus it causes the animal minimal pain, as well as ensures the maximum removal of blood from the body of the animal. Blood is the main carrier of impurities, and by electrocuting the animal before slaughtering it, the blood clots—this reduces the amount of blood that is expelled from the animals body after slaughter, as well as prolongs the pain felt by the animal…..sorry for the long explanation….lol J
6. On the Entertainment page—I think its probably best to get rid of the sports activity weekend, cuz to my knowledge it doesn’t exist? Lol.. don’t even know how it got there in the first place….you could replace it with SOCIALs – (separate for brothers and sisters)where freshers and older years get to know, talk and get advice from each other in a more relaxed hallal atmosphere…
Under the football bit, you might want to get rid of the name ‘Imran’ ..he’l no longer be featuring this year in the booklet, so the freshers wont have a clue who he is…replace it with Shayan.
Also, I was thinking maybe change the pic of italy winning the world cup with zidane headbutting matarazi?….just to liven things up? If not that, then how about a picture of Sami-Al Jabbar from Saudi Arabia? ..
7. On the Eating out page-Efes Kebab house should be changed to Efes Kebab house TAKEAWAY….
Also could you edit this bit -- One word of advice though, the restaurant part of the shop does sell alcohol and we cannot condone eating in that part. However, the take-away service is totally separate, and best of all you get to eat your food wherever you want!
To this: One word of advice though, the restaurant part of the shop does sell alcohol, so be aware. The take-away service is totally separate, and alcohol free, and best of all you get to take your food and eat it wherever you want!
8. On the Weekly and Annual Events page:I like the background you put with the holding hands, however I was thinking that It might be a bit dark for the text to show up clearly? What do you think? Especially if we are going to print it in A6…
The same goes for the coins on the Places to Eat page, as well as the pencil in the background on the Studying medicine page …it does make things look less bland, however just concerned that the text wont be clear over the picture….is there anyway to make the pictures like a watermark on the page? Or lighter?
9. On the page beginning with Books:The picture of the books is great, just move it slightly towards the right, so that its not behind any text, and is completely in the white space.
10. On the paragraph titled SOCIALISING:Could you please change the following sentence : Don't feel you can only be friends with brothers or sisters that’s not my advice. Just be with people that your comfortable
To this: Don't feel you can only be friends with muslim brothers/muslim sisters, that’s not my advice. After all, how do you expect others to learn more about Islam, if you alienate yourself away from them. In general, be with those people that your comfortable with, but at the same time be nice and polite to everyone else.
11. On the paragraph titled ‘Freshers Events’I don’t think this paragraph is necessary to be honest ---‘Alternatively the final decision is yours you may well wish to go to all of them, at the end of the day it’s your intentions that count the most.’
12. For the www.rums-isoc.uclu.org page…Im going to have to email you with a screen shot of the new website as soon as it is done…hopefully soon iA…um also, the last 2 paragraphs on this page seem to repeat themselves a bit on the forums…you might want to combine them if possible..
13. On Sisters Sports…..We have different timing for sisters sports this year,,, so where going to have to get rid of that advert of sisters sports and change ilhans message a bit. I need to contact ucl isoc to figure out which times sisters will be having their sports sessions and also where…
14. On the Friendly faces pageWondering how this is coming along? I contacted the individuals that would be having their pics in the booklet, but not all of them agreed that they would feel comfortable with their pic there, although they had said if absolutely necessary then they will include it. I however don’t want to force them.
Essentially thus, I don’t think it would be a good idea to have individual pics in the booklet this year, but compensate this please by including pics of the eid dinner. You can even include an old pic of the eid dinner which is on the old rums isoc website,
www.rums-isoc.uclu.org, and then scroll down to the bottom. The pic is small, so right click on it, and then save it on to your desktop. Once opened on your desktop it will become much larger.
Please post here as well, the list of people that you require blurbs from. I will try chase them up so that they send you their blurb asap. What I did last year was to get people to right other people’s blurbs as this made it more fun and people responded quite fast. How about doing that this year?
Let me know how things are going,
Take care
Wasalaam
Rashid
