Assalamu alaikum
The UCL student union was set up as a medium for students to have their say and ensure that their needs are met. With a massive budget of 1.7m pounds don't you ever wonder where all the money goes? Do you have your own views about where you think such a sum would be most effectively spent?? Do you feel a responsibility to ensure that the union is a true representation of students, of YOU? If you answer yes to any or none of the questions, then please read on...
To run for a position- Here comes the extremely complicated (..not..) bit so please concentrate:
So what's in it for me? I'm here to study and do well in my degree and maybe make some friends along the way- SU stuff is a waste of time... well, think again..
So, the next step? ask questions!! I have spent a year listening to myself talk about the same thing (which either means I've managed to cover everything, which I doubt because no one has come forward, or the second and more likely reason is that I've bored you guys to death so you switched off and missed it all...).
I can list all the positions that you can go for here but I don't think it'll be of much use. What I would recommend is that you have a look at the union booklet (also known as standing orders, but pls dont let the silly name put u off!) and go to page 33 for the job descriptions. Find your niche, pray istikhara and then intend to go for it insha'Allah. A warning that some positions have already been taken from the March elections but even if that is the case, insha'Allah you'll get the reward for the effort and intention for that position as well as the alternative you choose...

Elections take place in October and March(ish) time.
I am more than happy to answer questions over email or we can have a little session to go through things if people are interested.
So to end. please ask questions- post them on here if you can coz I'm sure a lot of you have similar questions in mind and it means that people that have more experience than myself are able to answer your questions as well- but if you prefer to email me:

To run for a position- Here comes the extremely complicated (..not..) bit so please concentrate:
- Wait for nominations to open
- Have a look at available positions and their job descriptions
- Choose one which suits your skills and interests the most
- Hand in nomination form
- Bit of campaigning- 'Hello/Assalamu alaikum person, I am running for this position because... so vote for me.' offer chocolate. The end
So what's in it for me? I'm here to study and do well in my degree and maybe make some friends along the way- SU stuff is a waste of time... well, think again..
- Do it with the right intention and it's a form of worship that will bring you closer to Allah (SWT)
- The SU WILL help you develop yourself and new skills, including skills which will be an asset to you in your medical careers
- You discover more about your strengths and weaknesses
- A chance to voice your concerns and criticisms and actually do something about them
- Improve your future job prospects
- Increase your awareness about the structure of organisations
- You are exposed to the way most democratic bodies work- including parliament.
- Another place where you are the ambassador of Islam, so u are motivated to improve yourself
- Believe me I can go on but will stop here and let you discover the benefits for yourself
