Salaam all What do people think about having a ´Quraan Club´ ... a weekly or fortnightly meeting where we read and discuss Tafsir of the Quraan as a group, Surah by Surah. It is important for everyone to allocate a time in their schedules for this, but for a lot of people it is often too easy to let our busy lives be the distractor from the more, and indeed most important goal of all.... And In this way, having an organised event may be the best way to get people focused and back on track; after all as an Isoc we should be providing people with the means and opportunity to increase our Islamic knowledge. And what better time to start this than during Ramadan?? Another thing we could consider would be a Quraan memorisation class, as even last year there were several sisters who contacted me with this request, which unfortunately we could not fulfill. It would be difficult probably to hold a class, but perhaps we could allocate people into groups of 2 , and give them the materials and instructions they need (Quraan on cd, printed transliteration of the Quraan etc), and allow them to contact their ´partner´ to arrange times\places that are convenient to them. In this way, no rooms need be booked, but at the same time it would be organised by the Isoc, ie each person could sign up, (possibly at the freshers fayre??) and we could pair people up from then. Anyways enough from me, what does everyone else think? WS Sana

Like both ideas to be honest...was thinking something along the lines of the first idea myself.. The only problem is, is that because were going to be having the seerah class after ramadan, and then obv our weekly meetings, its the timing that needs to be considered..some ppl might think we'l have too mchgoing on..
what i would say is have the tafseer gatherings once a fortnight...and do it so that ppl read a chapter/certain number of ayahs before hand...and then come to the gathering and discuss what they think..it duznt hav to be long..round 40 mins...and can be informal, but very enlightening at the same time...
we can start off with surah baqarah...and jst carry on going till uni finishes.. id like to know what ppl think too..
about the quran memorisation....it doesnt sound like mch work to be honest..get the quraan cd, transliteration off net, and give it to 2 ppl willing to help each other memorise...however dnt think freshers is the best time to publicise it! lol...think we can discuss this in more depth at our next meeting...
let me know what u think guys as always take care wasalaam Rashid

AA,
I agree that it would be great if we could organise some form of Tafseer class - even if it's fortnightly. With respect to Quran recitation or memorisation that too would be good (as suggested in pairs, I think UCL ISoc do something like this? Maybe get in touch with them).
My grandfather once told me that as humans we go through life starting at primary school till our old-age reading books - & understanding them! Be they story books, text books whatever. However very often the Best Book of all, and most valuable to us - the Holy Quran we read without understanding a word we've read.
This really taught me the importance of understanding this Great Book. Just think as Doctors if we'd gone through Med School without understanding a word we'd read of any book, what the consequences would be?

salam al alaikum, i think the tafseer is a really good idea, i also agree with what shayan is saying, and about what your grandad said; there really is so much that we should be discovering in the quran, and discussions seem like a nice way to do that. just one thing, do we need to be supervised?? or do we have it as a circle sort of thing where we discuss our take on what the ayahs say and mean, and maybe some of us ask more knowledgable people while we're reading the ayahs beforehand and then we bring up some of the points at the fortnightly gatherings? hmmmm i think freshers fayre may actually be a good point to advertise this, coz normally advertising takes effort, and at freshers fayre we already have our platform to everyone; or maybe announcements in lecture theatres would be good, coz a lot of people, even non-muslims may find it interesting....., or....shirin an shaarifa were talkin bout an extra half page in the freshers booklet, if its not too late, and times are decided by the time they need to finalise the booklet, then maybe it could be advertised there in that extra half page? btw rashid, hope u werent suggestin we start off by readin the whole of suratal baqarah! wasalam yasmin

Salam,
I hope the Quraan club goes ahead, its something that I would personally look forward to.
The Quraan is a beautiful book both in poetry and in meaning. Shayan's grandad is absolutely right, we go through life reading books and to us muslims this is the most important book of all yet so many of us, including myself, haven't put a great deal of time into reading it, although recently I have started reading on my own during the holidays with english translation and commentary. However the Quraan club will give me and others a chance to discuss the various ayahs and help boost our understanding of this glorious book.
I find the Quraan feeds the heart - helps to increase your Iman and a source of comfort with all the evil goings on in the world.
I think some sort of advertising is definitely needed - the idea about utilising the remaining space is a good idea but should not be limited to this since non-freshers would also be interested (like myself). The announcement is a good idea also - bulk advertising to a large audience!
Ok its 2.05 am need to sleep!

Saj

Salaam all,, so far i think most ppl who have posted said this would be a good idea..as for advertising it at freshers, it might be a bit to soon for the little kiddies and they might sort of get overwhelmed..if wer going to advertise it at freshers or in the booklet then wer going to need room bookings done, posters made, and a general plan for the Tafseer Classes...this will only delay the finishing of the booklet and getting it printed...which i dont think we can afford as we are running very behind our schedule at the moment... so i suggest, once we start uni, we have a meeting sometime during ramadan, organise this properly, and then we can start up our advertisn campaingn.. oh n yes, lol i was suggestn that we start with the whole of surah baqarah! tis cuz i think that 2 weeks is more than enough to read 200 + verses/sentences...ppl read the whole of Harry Potter in one day...200+ verses is nothing lol... or maybe we could read the first half of surah Baqarah? these are details that can be finalised later on closer to the date i think.. anywasy take care wasaalaam Rashid

AA, I agree that it's probably best to leave details of this out of the Freshers booklet because as you mentioned neither Room Bookings, timings etc have been confirmed. It would be a good idea if the details of this i.e. the exact start date, venue and so on could be discussed at a RUMS meeting and when it's been agreed we can advertise - you never know maybe some of the Freshers may even want to get involved in organising this (yeah not likely I know - but we can live in hope . Also having a meeting before we actually confirm details would be good as we were hoping to continue the Seerah classes from last year and would need to figure out days & dates to avoid clashes.
