AA, interesting times. The upgrade to the message board seems to have affected a few things, most notably, it no longer opens within a window in the main site, at least not if viewed through firefox, and i guess the other browsers will be the same. The result of this is that users need to use the link back to the website found just above the message tables on the homepage of the discussion boards. bother. ppl probably won't bother to read that to find out. maybe i shoudl try making it bigger? Still, i like the quick reply facility... other things of note: we seem to be (temporarily, i hope) barred from editting our own website... I guess it's time to shout at uclu again... This means that the hsting of the new questions feature couldn't be on our original site. hence, i have made use of the yahoo email address utility by obtaining geocities space to host some webstuff. The url is www.geocities.com/rumsisoc. right, this next bit is an attempt to place a link to that in this article... as a test for the article needed for the questions. here goes: Click www.geocities.com/rumsisoc/Question1.html for the picture. thats all for now. expect numerous edits to get this right WebMaster Numerous edits later: seems liek it works, then.

AA, I have been looking at some of the ULU ISoc websites and think that we can learn a lot from these and perhaps incorporate some of their better features into our site. The LSE site is particularly impressive: www.lseisoc.com/AA

AA, I'm not being funny, but which bit of the LSE site do you think is particularly impressive? I have looked it over. Some parts are very good. However, note the dates of the postings: nothing since february. checked their message boards? the forums are even emptier than our own! The biggest design flaw in their site is similar to that of our old site: it is very work intensive, for the ppl making it, in that the front page needs updating, or the 'news' becomes months old. I agree, there is much still to be done on our site too. It doesn't help that for some reason we are unable to write to it right now. But one of the reasons i redesigned the old site is so that the new one does not need this constant updating that the old one did. and to incorporate things like the forums. I have a feeling i am sounding more critical in this email than i in fact mean to. just one small request though... please tell me whjich bits are impressive. please? NMA

AA,
I apologise if any offence was caused by my previous message. I was not trying to criticise our website, but I feel that to make progress its helpful to look at, and discuss other ideas.
The comment was really more relevant for the UCLU Isoc. Their website (http://www.islamic.uclu.org/) doesn't appear to have been updated since Ramadaan.

AA,
don't worry. sometimes i sound harsher than meant. you'll learn to grow a thick skin, and that will help you out in life. also, enough with the constant apologies. please.
the reason ucl isoc havn't updated their page is because they were not able to. Their webmaster was unable to write to the site. a similar problem to what we now face. Rest assured, they have also got a new webmaster, and he has prepared a new site. They were actually planning to buy externally hosted webspace to host the site on. However, by speaking to the union, i discovered that we both seem to have missed some info about a transfer of files from the old to the new union servers. basically, the union used to buy the webspace externally and then let us use it, but now they host everything on their own servers... hence why interactive forms etc are now possible. it seems that during this transfer we have lost access. according to the union, there is someone who should be able to deal with this. his email addy is t.withstandley@ucl.ac.uk, i think (i will modify this post if it is wrong). I intend to email him as soon as i find the bit of paper i put his addy on!
Yes, it is always good to be open minded.

AA, I have sent a message to t.withstandley@ucl.ac.uk about the website and the email addy. message follows Wasalaam NMA Dear sir, I am the current WebMaster of the UCLU RUMS ISoc, and recently encountered difficulties when attempting to update the webpage. I have been given your email address by the union, so if i'm bothering the wrong person, please redirect me! The problem was first noticed a couple of weeks ago when, following the end of my exams, i tried to update the site. I use the old ipswith LE ftp software the union was recommending many years ago when i started out as WebMaster; i considered this may be a possible cause but was also unsuccessful in gaining access when attempting to ftp via Internet Explorer. The error message from the ftp software reads: 530 User rums-isoc cannot log in !Logon failure, so quitting. Internet Explorer simply gives: Could not login to the FTP server with the user name and password specified. This is the first time i have had any difficulties with the password in all the time we have had it. In fact, it's still the original password. The URL for the site is www.rums-isoc.uclu.org, and hence the ftp is rums-isoc.uclu.org. By the looks of it, the password is for some reason no longer valid. The old website itself is still active and in regular use, but i would like to sort it out before i hand over the job later in summer, and also need to finish off certain bits as soon as possible and desperately before freshers On a separate note, we have a less important issue with the email account. we currently have only uczxisr@ucl.ac.uk. which works fine, but we think it would be easier for people if we also had a mask of rums-isoc@ucl.ac.uk, or something similar, in the same way that i as a student have both zchavb3.ucl.ac.uk and n.ansari@ucl.ac.uk. hopefully you can shed some light on how to sort this out as well! Thank you in advance, Naadir Ansari RUMS ISoc WebMaster

AA, we have been sent a new password, but i still can't get hte thing to upload- still says we don't have access. Are you having the same problem? I am gonna write back to them about it. just to note, I have changed the name of the team to include other forms of techie media... film clips and presentations. not that we the only ppl who can make them, more that we can provide support. BTW, incoming WebMaster... what do you think of the WebMaster Avatar? (it can be changed) NMA

AA NMA,
I have connected successfully to the FTP using the username and password provided in the email from the union.
I have downloaded the entire site and am ready to make changes immediately.
I would like to discuss now which areas to focus on and then to start building the website ready for the freshers. I am going away in 3 weeks so I would like to have the site fully updated and uploaded before then.

AA, As we discussed before, it's probably best to get the missing sections filled in first. I am also considering updating the front page to show somethign like the last five posts on the forums, if i can work out how to do that properly i think most ppl wanted the academia section worked on next wasalaam NMA

AA, I'm using Dreamweaver to access the site. If you are using a similar program you could try: ftp.rums-isoc.uclu.org instead of rums-isoc.uclu.org for the address and see if this works. AA
